Craft Supplies, Ideas, and Tools
Crafts
and artwork have been created for thousands, if not millions of years
and are one of the most important aspects of a culturally rich civilization.
Art is universal because it is everywhere. It is lived in, eaten from,
watched, touched and worn in ways that reflect its creators and owners.
From cave paintings to finger paints arts and crafts have been practiced
by both young and old. Most art has a reason behind it even if it simply
the love of a certain color. Crafts go one step further and give the
art a functional use.
Many people have created functional crafts throughout the ages. Before
the industrial revolution is was a necessity to practice arts and crafts
because that is how bowls, spoons, aprons, clothing, and many other
important items came into existence. The industrial revolution was integral
for the mass production of goods necessary for a rapidly exploding population
but it was soulless and that was reflected in the products. The arts
and crafts movement was created to inspire people to continue practicing
craft making skills for their own fulfillment. Industrial labor was
alienating while craft making allowed for creative expression.
There are many crafts today that have been practiced for thousands
of years by masters and apprentices alike although many are merely considered
hobbies today. Glass blowing, furniture making, clay and pottery crafting,
and many other types of wood, metal, and textile items are now relegated
to production lines and are highly disconnected from the consumer. This
has only fueled the desire of many people to produce their own artwork,
pottery, sculpture, furniture, and even dwellings.
Craft supplies are as various and unique as the items they can create.
Everything from old egg cartons to doilies can be used to create interesting
items. There are craft ideas involving textiles and sewing, there are
many different crafts that can be done with wood and there are tons
of paper crafts that can be made by both young and old. Basket weaving
is a popular craft and can be done with found plants such as straw.
Bead crafts are easy and fashionable and also make great kids crafts.
Other craft supplies such as craft ribbon, craft felt, craft paint
and various
art supplies can be found at a craft store which can easily
be found in many major cities and towns. Creativity is important for
a unique craft and often some of the best items are created from found
or recycled objects. Bird houses can be made from dried out gourds and
dolls can be made from old socks and clothing. Keeping track of all
those materials can be tough sometimes but that can be managed with
craft boxes complete with dividers to keep everything in its place and
easily accessible.
Get an idea and run with it because you’ll never know how it
can turn out unless you try it out. There are countless useful crafts
that can be done in many peoples free time. Crochet a hat while riding
the bus to work. Knit a sweater while watching a movie. The possibilities
are endless and you never know when a hobby will become a profession.
